All Comes From Nothing // Eva Xu’s Collection with NOLCHA for NYFW

In my case, I used the elements of these simple forms- square, cube, line and color- to produce logical systems. Most of these systems were finite; that is, they were complete using all possible variations. This kept them simple.

It is believed by many that fashion is an expression of self. The difficulty is, most days I’m not sure which part of my “self” I want to express. Pretty soon I’m walking out the door with a sparkly scarf, a snow jacket, a pair of red Doc Marten’s and some mediocre blue jeans. The need to express who I am through my clothing sometimes causes a startling combination of good intentions gone wrong. I needed to simplify.

The minimalist approach of independent designer Eva Xu at the NYFW All Comes From Nothing runway show was enough to make me fall in love with the idea that less is more. Her newest designs are inspired by Sol LeWitt — an advocate for the use of simple shapes and cuts resulting in the most chic effect.

The use of lines and geometry created a fresh vibe and the onlookers were intrigued. Minimalism accentuated every detail of the outfit. Suddenly the draping and the textures of the fabric were getting the attention they deserved. The simplicity was refreshing. Certain cuts can have a huge impact when they are not being upstaged by the overuse of fringes, embellishment and embroidery. Of course, fringes have a special place in my heart but they pale in comparison to the confident and sophisticated statement that a well-cut dress can make.

Some days I feel the need to pile on jewelry and colors — which definitely has it’s place in fashion. But ‘All Comes From Nothing’ reminded me of the importance of basics. Next time I dress to impress I might reach for that sleek black dress or that classic white button up shirt. Nothing causes a stir quite like the classic minimalist look.
