Lavender Fields for the Summer · An NY Road Trip

Imagine a field full of lavender, a really dreamy scene with the sun shining brightly down, butterflies flying all around and the smell in the air that just kind of calms your nerves and de-stresses your entire body.

It almost feels like you are magically rejuvenated in an instant. It feels like you’re smelling Mother Nature’s perfume. I love lavender and I love when I’m able to be out in an open field, taking deep breaths with nobody around except for the people I showed up with. That was what we did this week when we drove out to a delightful lavender field in Long Island.

We took a road trip (which is our new thing). I’m a New Yorker, living in Lower Manhattan, so getting a car or renting a car isn’t always an easy process, but these days it’s definitely worth it. I miss travel. I mean, right now we were supposed to be in Italy and then Europe and all these fun places with our new baby. Well, he’s four months old, so it’s usually safe to travel, but with the pandemic and COVID spreading like wildfire, we’ve just been cooped up inside and we don’t have a backyard or things like that, so making an effort to go outside and be in nature, go hiking or walking in the park, it’s such a wonderful rewarding feeling.

We took a trip to Lavender By The Bay Calverton out towards the Hamptons and it was just so wonderful. It’s been tough wearing a mask and I was really craving fresh, calming lavender fields. Lucky for me, a friend of mine told me how she had recently gone and I was shocked because I don’t keep track of when it’s in season. So as soon as I got a whiff of the idea, I told my husband about it and we set a date.

I really enjoy the benefits of lavender, especially the calming sensation. As soon we got to the field, out of our car, this big breath of pure lavender hit my nose and it was so crazy how satisfying it felt.

It was really hot and in an open field, so we only went to sit outdoors and enjoy the scenery, enjoy the breeze. We did a few deep breathing exercises there, letting in all the good and getting out all the bad. Well, they have these cute little chairs – lounge chairs, out in the open field and they’re really spread out so you can pick spots and be really far apart from people.

Before we left, we made sure to pick up some lavender products to bring that amazing aroma home with us. They close in October so there’s still time to go if you live in New York and you’re trying to make a fun day trip with your family.

After the fields, we went to a place about 15 minutes further out towards North Fork with a quaint little street called Lovers Lane, in Mattituck. I’ve been there once before with New York’s tourism board and I remember when I went I was so at awe, I really wanted my Jeff to be there with me. And it was a solo trip, so I was really excited that years later I get to take him there to the exact restaurant that I really wanted him to be with me at, and even a better perk I got to take my son too!

If you’re looking to upgrade your space, while you’re at it, there is a great outlet for West Elm, Williams-Sonoma and Pottery Barn Kids and I just like…now I understand what it feels like to be a mom. I’m just saying now I’m a mom and I’m excited when I see furniture store outlets, I’m like yes, let’s stop by; they’re all right next to each other making it very convenient but if you’re anything like me and love decorating — give yourself an hour at least because it is big. I was able to snag some sweet wooden shelves and a few other nice finds at 50% off!

It’s tough not being able to travel to all the places that we had in mind for this year, but it’s really nice to have the opportunity to explore your own backyard a bit more. The Northeast is a very interesting and beautiful place and I think the lavender fields in Calverton is definitely worth a day trip for any city girl like me.
