Inspire Change · Be a Young Leader · Serve Communities The United Way, in NYC

A strong education is the foundation for a thriving future and you can help those less fortunate!

When like-minded people come together, their voices echo louder. A good friend of mine, Treeva Royes, and her friends from United Way of New York City (UWNYC) invited me to their Young Leaders Council (YLC) Summer Soiree. Where they — like me — believe that a strong education is the foundation for a thriving future for us all. YLC is a community brought together to help low-income individuals and families shift from leading lives where they’re barely surviving to THRIVING.

I enjoy being able to help other New Yorkers in need the way the Young Leadership Council does. Whether it’s helping children gain the access to school supplies, gardening to help prevent hunger, giving extra helping hands at a soup kitchen or partying for a cause. The YLC helps me fulfill my need of giving back to the less fortunate on a regular basis. I’m more than proud to be a member and volunteer whose surrounded by such an amazing team from United Way NYC that gives back.

On a warm New York night, I was invited to their famous Summer Soirée — which financially supports UWNYC’s programs like ReadNYC that are helping families move from barely surviving to fully thriving. The beautiful penthouse sits on Central Park South overlooking the iconic park and even the Met Museum, it is donated by one of YLC’s great members. Everything from the personalities to the music, food, and breathtaking views and great cause was inspiring. They even had a special (Insta-worthy) Summer Soiree cocktail for sale, where all the proceeds directly support their programs.

What Some of Their Challenges Are:

What I Learned:

They have introduced me to programs like ReadNYC. Where from 2016–17, ReadNYC empowered more than 800 students, nearly 230 parents, 55 teachers, and 12 principals.

There are 263 million youth boys and girls who are out of school largely due to man-made issues.

Imagine what will be possible if they are empowered with quality, holistic education to become the leaders & citizens of the world.

ReadNYC empowers families and communities as a whole—from a child who can’t read, to educators who are under-resourced, to parents who can’t make ends meet. To get this work done, we’re taking a powerful collective approach—bringing together companies, nonprofit partners, foundations, government agencies, and individuals (like our YLCers and you) to the table, to set and implement a comprehensive strategy that increases access to quality education for kids while helping their low-income parents or caregivers build more stable homes.
