How to be a Carless Warrior in Los Angeles

tumblr_m14gc5d7kR1qznc3co1_400Living without a car can be a cinch in places like NYC or San Francisco where there is an integrated transit system but for the urban sprawl of Los Angeles and other cities where transit is limited it can be a challenge to get around. So if you are losing your car now or have found yourself in a new city with no ride, I’ve got some super useful tips to getting around.

Los Angeles is big and when I say big, I mean LA County is about 93 square miles short of being the same size as the state of Connecticut. For some reason you have to go everywhere all over this vast expanse of 4,752 sqr miles. This requires a force of will and a whole lot of planning.

  1. GET GOOGLE MAPS: It’s not always right but it has the most integrated knowledge of every city you travel too. Even if you have it always give yourself a buffer zone, know where it is taking you, and check with local transit sources. But seriously it is my map of life and I would perish without it.

  2. CHARGE YOUR PHONE, also bring a wall charger and a portable battery. You rely on your phone when you’re in the wild, it keeps you safe and on track. You don’t want to lose your power because it can leave you quite literally in the dark. It’s all about safety folks!

  3. GET YO RIDE SHARE ON! Get an Uber, lyft, sidecar…etc app. When push comes to shove, these are great for grocery runs, party nights etc… Also important for the carless as an emergency resource when you’re in a sticky situation. I cannot stress, safety first! Use UberDOOST for $30 off your first ride!

Extra note: Be conscious of your surroundings, if something doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t. Follow your gut, it’s usually right and theirs not point in finding out if it’s wrong!
