Brooklynite the Musical at the Vineyard Theater

Brooklynite the Musical at the Vineyard Theater

The world of theater is an astonishing place for me. Last Sunday I was invited to a special screening of BROOKLYNITE at the legendary Vineyard Theater in New York. What a wonderful way to spend an evening. BROOKLYNITE is a musical, helmed by Tony Award-winning director Michael Mayer (Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Spring Awakening).

The Brooklynite story revolves around Trey Swieskowski, who is an idealistic hardware store clerk/genius who dreams of becoming a superhero. Astrolass, Brooklyn’s most celebrated superhero, is determined to throw in the cape and live like a normal Brooklynite. When they meet they hatch a plan that will change their lives forever.

The show portrayed the essence of the hero within each of us. Beyond that, the moral of the story is that in order to accomplish big goals, we must work together as a team as the 5 superheroes needed the help of each other to succeed.

The musical portions of the show were the highlight for me. I really felt a connection to this part of the performance because the singers have beautiful voices and there were elements of humor throughout the songs. Their use of elaborate, colorful sets and creative transitions to new sets through crew that danced among the actors was well done and entertaining. If you love original theatre, especially when based in New York City, you won’t want to miss Brooklynite!

BSHS_FrontThe show is also based on a place that hits close to my heart, the Superhero Supply Co., part of the non-profit organization 826NYC. I volunteered there as a tutor and met some of the most creative little superheroes who would work together to create their own superhero stories and create actual books! Stay tuned for Piper Werle’s article that dives deeper into this soon on WtD.

I love the Vineyard Theater, they even encouraged the audience to let their inner superhero stand unnamedout with a display in the lobby that people could pose with a cape of their own choice, stand upon a elevated platform, and do their superhero pose. Rose Hirschel partook in the fun!
