Sushi on the West Coast: Octopus Japanese Restaurant in LA
Behind California’s sunny smiles, their relaxed sate of mind and outdoor yoga, resides some of the most creative and talented sushi chefs America has to offer. The West Coast wins the category and it includes Octopus Japanese Restaurant. A sushi specialty hidden in the valleys of Encino. And for those of you who aren’t familiar with the city, well, remember the movie Encino Man? That’s my hood 🙂
The service speaks for itself, personable and funny. The scenery is unlike what I’ve experienced in Cali and all the more better. The lighting is on the purple and blue side which is perfect for a date. Sets the mood right and the lighting compliments ones tone. The booths are comfortable and it’s friendly to large parties. Their Happy Hour 🙂 is also one of the best in the valley and so far my favorite.
Esther makes the experience all the more enjoyable. She has great recommendations, a lovely personality and a great sense of humor.
The selection is broad and the quality is great. I recommend sharing plates and ordering different varieties. If you’re more of a raw fish lover, don’t worry, they cater to your needs as well.
The picture menu is great for two things; One, fresh fish can be intimidating, so the pictures help ease our choices as well as factor “I’ll have what that table is having,” craving. While at the same time, allowing you to be daring and bold with your order. Also, trying new dishes get easier and friendlier. The second reason is my personal favorite. For anyone growing up with parents whose first language isn’t English, this makes the ordering process efficient and the experience more pleasurable.
As a New York resident and East Coast fan I think the best oysters are found in the Atlantic Ocean. I’m also a big fan of the fish. But as a creative food lover, the West out does the East Coast in sushi.
