The Best DIY Hair Treatment for Damaged Hair

The warm weather is officially here, which means two things for your hair: sun and highlights! I love a good sun-kissed glow — the only drawback is the damage it brings to your hair. Never fear, I have the best DIY hair treatment (no matter what your hair type):

Coconut Oil Deep Conditioning Treatment

Since my beauty school days, this has always been my favorite, go-to conditioning treatment. It’s inexpensive (you can pick up a bottle of coconut oil for about $10) and super easy to do.

Step 1: Start with day-old, dry hair. Prep your work area: You’ll need coconut oil, a bowl, hair clip(s) and a color brush for application (optional). Make sure you’re not wearing clothes the coconut oil can stain. Put about a couple of tablespoons of coconut oil in the bowl — don’t worry if it’s a solid, it will melt.

Step 2: Section your hair. I like to create a part down the middle so that I have two front sections and one in the back.

Step 3: Divide each part into smaller, one-inch sections as you work your way through your hair. Apply coconut oil with a color brush or with your hands. I usually just use my hands because it gives me more control + it’ll moisturize your skin as well! Really focus on your ends because those are likely the most damaged. Avoid putting it on the hair on your scalp (unless you have a dry scalp) because otherwise it will weigh your hair down. You’ll notice that your hair will soak up a good amount of the oil; don’t be afraid to apply a lot.

Step 4: Wait about half an hour, if you have the time. I like to sit outside because the heat opens up your hair cuticles and helps the absorption process (you could also use a blow-dryer on a low setting).

Step 5: Rinse, rinse, rinse! Hop in the shower and let your hair run under the water for a good five minutes or so. Then, shampoo regularly. You made need to shampoo twice if you feel like there’s a lot of residue. Condition as you normally would.

And it’s that easy! You can do this as often as you’d like, but I recommend doing it only once a week so you don’t weigh your hair down. You’ll notice a difference immediately and especially in the week following your treatment. Enjoy!
