The Future Goddess: Angel Sanchez at NYFW2014
Designers are artists portraying a vision to share with the world. My favorite time to question the designers happens backstage while they are preparing for the show. I asked the wonderful Angel Sanchez:
What is your inspiration?
Sanchez’ answer took my breath away:
Memories.
It took only a one word answer to have me understand Sanchez new collection, but to further illuminate:
Dark Innocence is inspired by a woman who appears to be conservative and demure… dressed with monastic elegance, she prays for a divine power to help her control her darkest dreams, the forbidden. Maybe she is a sinner looking for pardon, I’m not sure. Regardless, its time that I give her some attention.
Backstage at the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week taking place at the Lincoln Center, the Red Door Spa creative team makes it happen while welcoming us with smiles and great conversation. I chatted with Cesar Olivas, Makeup Artist for Elizabeth Arden’s Red Door Spa, backstage who shared with me his excitement for such a beautiful and elegant process. Olivas explained that he wanted the beauty of innocence to be portrayed in his art, like if she’s going to church.
The makeup is minimal and very conservative, showcasing the elegance and beauty of the model and clothes, as she has some mysteriousness to her with intriguing eyes.
The Look:
For Fall/Winter 2014, the designer is taking us back to Colonial times in Latin America where “Beatas,” a group of women who were devoted to God, were judged by society and sometimes imprisoned by their evolving mentalities and untraditional behavior against religion. Many of these women were single, some married and some widow. Through the designer’s collection, you’ll witness how Angel Sanchez uses the capes to represent convent and religion and leather to show liberation.
The collection is fierce! The cuts are daring with sophistication. His show starts with a selection of the perfect black dress. The type you need 5 of in your closet.
He plays with blacks, metallics, fur, and leather. Taking the usual and intensifying it with the right amount of style.
Then the ladies in lace step out, proving that Sanchez can always take it one step further and make it a dream. The layering allows the outfit to show more skin in all the right places.
The greens are fabulous! The cuts are sleek and edgy. Then we get more metallics! A little bit of sparkle then come the whites with metallics. It’s future meets the goddess dress.
