Nicholas K Opens Fashion Week at Lincoln Center, NYFW2014
The Nicholas K show opened Mercedes Benz Fashion Week 2014 at the Lincoln Center. Nicholas Kunz, the designer, works closely with her brother, Christopher, who handles the business side of the team. She is one of my favorite designers! Their downtown edge pulls you in, making grunge sexy and appealing in a punk gothic rock sense.
The designer’s taste of fabrics and colors were mesmerizing! Loving the use of leather in the show. Her innate ability to make her pieces flow together are perfect. She makes it flow for both men and women. The designer concepts were brilliant.
Her cut out tops underneath layers made for an interesting choice. Made accessible to those club goers who want warmth yet relief when inside. Also the long draping of the sweaters were beautiful around the cut out tank tops.
She also created beautifully tailored jackets for the men. And her use of denim was beautiful and smart. She kept the unique gothic style in her use of denim. She had all the components of the season must haves incorporated with her style. This show was definitely my favorite today!
My industry insider Beau Alexander sat down for an interview and shared a video of the finale from the show. This is a short clip, but will get you a feel for the show from an inside look. Beau is a student at Fashion Institute of Technology and interning at Danika Daly PR.
Q: What would you like to do in the fashion industry?
A: “Ideally, I’d like to work in beauty for an editorial magazine. But for now, I am a public relations specialist for a PR firm that specializes and represents clientele in fashion and beauty, so I get the best of both worlds.”
Q: What was the ambiance like at the show?
A:”I’d say the show was very minimalistic in appearance, the real focus was on the clothing and not so much the atmosphere. The lights were bright and the music was heavy with a drum-like rhythm. The walls and runway were made to look like concrete slabs – giving it that coldness to enhance the fall/winter aspect of the pieces.”
Q: What was your perspective of the show?
A: “It was very edgy – I’d dare to say dark and eerie but in a sleek way. There was very little color – most of the items were grey, navy, and black. Perhaps the gothic trend will resurface? Hopefully following this higher fashion approach!”
Q: What did you like most from the show?
A: “Overall, I’d say I liked how the runway was set up. It was nice to be able to see the clothing up close – and from the maze-like arrangement, nearly everyone could share in the experience with only slight variations in perspective.”
Q: Did you have a favorite piece from the show?
A:”Personally, I enjoyed look number 31. It’s a heavy weight knit that was paired with an updated and artistic twist on the typical sweatpants. The color was beautiful – the royalness of the navy ensemble really caught my attention.” (You can find piece 31 HERE.)
Q: What knowledge did you gain from the show?
A:”Black is still very much the new black and layering will always be in style so long as you know which pieces to put together. Also, many of the outfits for the men and women were interchangeable which could very well aid in the breakdown of culturally accepted stereotypes of masculinity and femininity.”
Q: What advice would you give from seeing the show?
A:”Be creative. Don’t be afraid to bend the rules here and there.”
Hope you fashion lovers enjoy! Sure be to check out Nicholas K!
