The Professor
Growing up, I was inspired by many television scientists. They had the ability to take scientific ideas and present them in a way that the audience could relate to. Mr. Wizard, Bill Nye the Science Guy, and Carl Sagan all impacted many people with the art of humanizing sciences.
There was another, fictional character, that entertained us while applying enough science to make him “The Professor.” The actor who played The Professor, Russell Johnson, passed away on Thursday, January 16th at his home in Washington state at age 89.
Gilligan’s Island was a popular show that ran from 1964-1967 and then ran in syndication for decades after that and Johnson’s character was able to take his science teacher self and whatever he could find on the island to make radios, generators, and even a car. He was the intelligent one that everyone turned to for answers and inventions.
I owe a big thank you to the MacGyver of deserted islands and a trailblazer as a personable scientist. I hope to honor his name and provide entertaining science that you can apply to your daily life.
Some future posts will include “You are a literally a freaking magnet,” “Why Sunglasses are Cool (based on Quantum Physics),” and probably something about using Physics to be better at sports.
