You’re Getting Married! Here are a Few Ways to Face the In-Laws
You and your partner have taken it to the next level in your relationship. It’s time to meet the dreaded in-laws. This can turn out to be a fruitful and fun experience or a complete disaster or some limbo in between. How does one make it a fantastic experience?
- Understand that these people don’t know how awesome you are. They’ve only had hearsay. So if they are prickly and question you or your motives at first, win them over with genuiness and kindness. They just want to know their loved one is safe.
Every family is different. If you go in with an open mind and heart you will intigrate with their family much easier. Say you are an ardent democrat and the family is a republican household. Leave politics at the door and deal directly with the humans in front of you with compassion and understanding. Remember, you don’t have to “be” them but you will have to be around them.
- It’s a great opportunity to find out more about your partner and what has made them who they are today. Whatever their relationship is with their family, these are the people who shaped the wonderful person you now call a partner. So be observant, interested, and enjoy every quirk and idiosyncrasy.
Whichever way your first meet goes, you’ve got your love at the end of the day and you can create your own family.
