Carmen Marc Valvo Channels the Warrior Within, NYFW2014
After going through five layers of security at the Lincoln Center, we finally get to the widely talked about Carmen Marc Valvo Fall 2014 collection show taking place in the Theater. We take our seats in what seems to be a room best described as an artists blank canvas. No fancy decor, colored lights, or advertisement. Just a runway and seats filled by colorful outfits and personalities.
The room was packed with fashion lovers from all around the world.
The lights dimmed until it was pitch black and the crowd fell in silence. The sounds of heavy Middle Eastern drums filled the room spreading the right ambiance for what was to come. The drums transitioned into a beautiful and gentle melody before evolving into a classic American song, “Love is a battlefield.”
Gowns sparkle with taste as they drip onto the stage and the cuts are unique while form fitting. Carmen Marc Valvo’s inspiration emerged from a recent trip to Turkey.
The crossroads of Constantinople Empire serve as an inspiration for the collection resplendent with historic illusion.
The opulence of the Ottoman Empire is reflected in a melange of metal-work and mosaics adorning bodices, riding coats and bustiers, creating armor-like protection. Breast plates and shields, Crusade ready.
Coming from a Middle Eastern background with strong roots in my culture and living in America I felt proud of how Carmen Marc Valvo merged two beautiful cultures. At a sensitive time for cultures from the Middle East, Carmen Marc Valvo made a strong statement by combining it with today’s American culture. The sensation was breathtaking!!

I enjoyed seeing the change from last years show where it was all about the big hair. Yet, this year it’s all about pulling back the strands and letting the outfits speak for themselves.
