5 Ways to Zen your Home

Not everyone is born with the styling gene. The type that can even make messy look good. But there are ways we can outsmart style in our homes by using our space right, incorporating the science of colors, and leaving the rest to Mother Nature.

Interior designer Shelly Lynch-Sparks is a genius at this and shares these 5 tips.

1. De-clutter and get organized

Clutter is stress inducing. Anyone whose ever spent unnecessary time looking for something knows this to be true.

It’s true that a cluttered desk means an active mind. Albert Einstein is the perfect example of his own truth. But fashion and style allow us to make clutter look good.

Lynch-Sparks advice is to take a trip to The Container Store and memorize the mantra –everything has a place, everything in its place

Take a few extra minutes to carve out a specific place for each item, and you’ll save time and sanity in the long run.

Extra note *get a pretty, patterned box to hide that pile of paper you’re just never going to get to.

2. Bring the outside in

Invest in some low maintenance plants. Succulents are perfect for this because you don’t want to stress taking care of them. You can add nature inspired texture and patterns to your decor.

Also, a lot of people don’t realize that these plants clean the air and help rid toxins.

3. Consider cool colors

Best colors to use are soft neutrals or blue hues. Lynch-Sparks says:

If you’re going for more of a relaxing Zen-like atmosphere, you’ll want to use cool colors like blue hues or soft neutrals.

Colors have a way of raising emotions. Our minds are easily influenced by the things we come into contact with.

There is a reason bright colors aren’t common at spas. Too many colors have a way of creating confusion. If using bright colors add a great accent like black, which also keeps it modern.

Patterns are amazing but hard to do right. If mixing go bold but even it out with basics by layering. For more tips click here.

4. Lighting

Yes my dear readers. Lighting is essential to bringing the peace. Just like most objects, lighting needs to have a purpose. Stock your place with task lamps. Like desk lamps, floor lamps, and table lamps.

Those too bright, harsh, overhead lights can cause a headache.

Well and Good NYC has this to say about lamps;

Warmer lighter, produced by halogen bulbs, tend to be more soothing, but if you want to protect the Earth’s health too, choose fluorescent and get a shade that tempers or dulls the brightness a bit.

Lynch-Sparks says burlap or linen shades would work well too.

5. Create Symmetry

This is definitely optional, but some of our clients like to have symmetry to create a cohesive room. It creates balance in the room.

Thank you Lynch-Sparks and Well+Good NYC! I am one of these OCD people who can’t stand picture frames slightly crooked. So this concept will surely benefit me as well as help me sleep more soundly knowing everything is in balance.
