Dolce & Gabbana Dive Into the Middle Eastern Fashion World With their Abaya and Hijab Collection

Dolce & Gabbana made a plunge into the Middle Eastern world by debuting their Abaya Collection exclusively on Style.com/Arabia on Sunday. The collection plays with the beautiful drapes of abayas and hijabs.

For the most part, the collection comes in neutral hues—luxe black and sandy beige—while a sprinkling of abayas capture the Sicilian spirit of the house (and make a nod to the Spring 2016 collection) with printed daisies, lemons, and lush red roses. The abayas and hijabs come in sheer georgette and satin weave charmeuse fabrics and include copious lace details along hems. They also appear to feature a lightweight and dramatic drape, which makes this debut collection rife with special occasion overlays to be worn to celebrate the inimitable dolce vita that is distinct to us in the Arab world.

I remember seeing these similiar style on the Hollywood glams like Audrey Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe, and Grace Kelly, Princess of Monaco.

Back then, even as a Middle Eastern, it didn’t occur to me that some regions of the world strictly required their women to cover their hair. As a young Muslim lady growing up in a westernized world, I recognize the beauty of the style and what the act of wearing the hijab or abaya mean to some of these dedicated and honorable Muslim women.

I love seeing fashion designers showcasing their inner unity by expanding their horizons — with their curiosity — exploring, understanding, and unifying cultures. The Abaya and Hijab Collection by Dolce & Gabbana represents more than fashion and beauty, but also a positive contribution to the pop-culture we’re exposed to.

The abaya “cloak” is a simple, loose over-garment, essentially a robe-like dress, worn by some women in parts of the Muslim world including in North Africa and the Arabian Peninsula.
